Alternate Route to Certification

In addition to the teacher education programs offered by Connecticut's colleges, the Department of Higher Education offers the Alternate Route to Teacher Certification (ARC). This program is designed to attract mid-career professionals to teaching.

Applicants must have at least a Bachelor's degree to apply. Many Charter Oak State College graduates have chosen to enter the teaching profession through this adult-friendly program.

With an understanding that adults have busy schedules and many demands on their time, ARC offers two formats from which you may choose. You can attend an eight-week program of full-time instruction during the summer or you can opt for the twenty-four week program that meets during the school year on Friday evenings and all day Saturdays. For more information, visit ARC's Website. In addition, Charter Oak offers workshops where you can meet with an ARC representative.

If you reside outside Connecticut, please contact your State's Department of Higher Education for similar programs.
